Article - The Lord's Second Coming
Between true believers there will be agreement that our Lord came to this world and died for our sins. However there will perhaps be a stronger and more varied debate about when He will return.
Since the founding of Israel after the First World War there have been an increasing number of predictions made about the imminent return of our Lord. Personally I feel that it is misguided and perhaps even damaging to put an exact date on His return. I have even heard it said that the Lord has reneged on His promise, that he is late because Jesus spoke of returning “soon”. This is clearly a misguided attitude. It is of course true that “with the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.” (2 Pe. 3:8) The Lord is not late and His return may be soon.
While I would not claim to know that the Lord’s return is imminent, since I must always remember that Jesus said “of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only,” (Matt. 24:36) I would say that in my opinion the end may be close and there are a few indications we can use to propose this.
Not only is there a move towards globalisation, that one can surely correlate to the prophesised one-world government, but events closer to my home in Europe suggest that things are becoming clear. Of course it is predicted that the nations of the world must unify their currency onto a universal standard and that the Roman Empire will rise in another form. Well, we have an expanding European Union, using a standard currency in an area roughly equating to the Roman empire.
Furthermore, as we know, it is essential for there to be stability in the Middle East. This is on its way. Since the 1940’s and onwards when Israel was continually under bombardment and attack it has strengthened its position in the region and I would suggest that the countries surrounding it no longer feel that they can threaten its dominance.
I have indicated only fleeting issues, there are others, but the facts are there for people to see and interpret themselves. I am not a prophet, I cannot say with certainty when the end will come. However, I know this: the Lord will not go back on His promise, and He may return soon. I would urge the reader to “take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.” (Mark 13:33) I would urge anyone to turn to their Bible, to investigate the truth, to prepare themselves for the possibility of the Lord’s return. Most importantly though, we must all remember that even if the Lord does not return in our lifetimes it is necessary to take heed of our own salvation. We must continue to follow His Word and continually be prepared to meet Him and be judged accordingly.
