Article - Temptation
The most famous Biblical temptations that I can think of are Jesus and Job. Both of these men were mighty man of God and prove that you can be at any stage in life and be tempted.
Both of these men were asked to curse God and both of these men refused because they loved God with all their hearts and knew their Scripture to prove their tempter wrong.
In Luke 4:2 Jesus had been in the wilderness for forty days and had fasted for the entire time that he was there so he was not only tired but hungry. In this verse it also goes on to explain that during those forty days Jesus was tempted by the Devil. At the end of this time the Devil saw food and power as possible ins to the mind and soul of Jesus. But not only had Jesus been fasting but he had also been praying. So his strength was increased not decreased as the Devil believed.
This scripture really stands out to me because it goes to show that the Devil is looking to kill and destroy to ultimately pull us away from God. He wants to know our weaknesses so that he can exploit us in every way possible.
How can we have the victory over temptation and the tempter?
I believe Jesus and Jobs both could have turned against God. But both had faith that God would not give them more than they could endure.
Although the Devil can tempted us Jesus has already won that victory on the Cross.
These are some to the steps that I believe Jesus took to be strong against temptation.
1. Realized that the body is weak but the Spirit is strong. Watch ad pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the body is weak. Matt 26:41
2. Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit before be put himself in a weak position. Jesus full of the Holy Spirit returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert. Luke 4:1
3. He was led by non other than the Spirit as stated in the above verse to go.
4. He submit himself to God before any of this occurred. So when he quoted scripture at the Devil, he had not other option than to flee. Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil and he will flee you. James 4: 7
5. Jesus quoted Scripture continually at the Devil. He knew his authority in God and used it.
6. He was always prepared for the next time. The Devil will always be roaming like a lion waiting for another opportunity. When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. Luke 4:13
It is important to know who we are in Christ and to not to scared to use it. Being a Christian gives us a power over temptation in that we are no longer controlled by our sinful nature but we are transformed by the renewal of our minds.
Christ has won the victory over temptation. Submit to him and the Devil will be forced to flee.
