Article - Looking For the Savior

John 4:25-26 The woman said, “I know that Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us. Then Jesus declared, “I who speak to you am he.”

The story of the woman at the well is interesting to me becuase it shows two very different dimensions of our lives that sometimes come together…the natural and the supernatural.

First, it shows the natural, ordinary world…Jesus as an ordinary human being, with natural wants and needs. He sat down at the well because he was tired. He asked the Samaritan woman for a drink. What’s interesting to me is that this is the same Jesus that turned water into wine. Surely, he could call up the most refreshing fountain ever from the ground, and he and the rest of the town could drink from it. Instead, he asks the woman for a drink. He shows her his human side, but he is about to amaze her with his supernatural side.

He tells her that she should have asked him for the living water that comes only from God. I always chuckle when I read the woman’s response…”you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep.” Doh! This is the creator you’re talking to, ma’am. She didn’t understand that he wasn’t talking about mere water anymore. Later in the conversation, Jesus was still talking about spiritual water, and the woman still thought he was talking about the water in the well. Then, Jesus hits her over the head with a supernatural sledgehammer. He tells her that she has had five husbands. She recognizes that he must be a prophet. Then, he tells her plainly that he is the Messiah, the Savior of the World.

Now, the woman was not spiritually sharp. Jesus turned the conversation to spiritual things, but she continued to think of only what she could see and feel. She was an ordinary person in an ordinary world. Yet, she knew a little about the Messiah. Jesus used the tiny bit of knowledge she had to reveal his true nature to her. When she realized who He was, she was truly amazed.

All these years later, I feel like the woman at the well. I have been a Christian for 18 years. I know a little bit about what God has taught me. I know I am called by Him to keep my eyes on the spiritual, even the supernatural. Yet, I am constantly seeking the water from the well, and forgetting about the spiritual water that Jesus promised. I am looking for things that satisfy, but am mostly unable to attain them because I take my eyes off of Christ.

Lord, may you give me eyes to see your true nature, a mind that understands you, and a heart that seeks you, even in ordinary circumstances.
