Article - God is the Builder
Psalm 127:1 Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain…”
Solomon is said to be the wisest man who ever lived (next to Jesus). He spoke many Proverbs, which are recorded in the book of the same name. He probably wrote Ecclesiastes, a book that searches for the meaning of life. Solomon is also credited with Psalm 127, a short snippet declaring that God must be behind whatever we do, or it will ultimately be in vain. He certainly knew quite a bit about life and how to live it.
If I were going to follow the advice of any person, I would seek out the wisest one, and listen to what they said. Solomon knew that the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting. God’s plans will succeed, even when it appears that the whole world is against Him. This world, with its large countries, vast cities, tall towers, and shopping malls will not go on forever. God will eventually carry out the end of all things, as it is written in the book of Revelation.
My wife and I bought a house a couple of years ago. By our front doorbell, there is a placard that reads, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) We choose to serve God, not only because of our love for Him, but also because we know that unless we live for Him, we live in vain. Romans 8:28 states that “in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to his purpose.”
If we allow God to “build the house”, it will ultimately work out for our good, according to His purpose. If we try to build the house ourselves, it will still turn out for our good in the end, but we would have been much better off letting God take control, since He knows beforehand how everything will turn out. All of the “good” deeds in the world are considered by God to be rubbish, unless they are done through faith in Him. In other words, our labor would be pointless, like trying to put out a hand to stop a train that’s already in full motion, with a destination in mind and a schedule to keep.
Father, help me to see when I am trying to “build the house” on my own, and show me that it’s much better to let you be the architect, planner, and builder of my life.
